Summer Assignments

Summer work completion may be required for some courses. The purpose of this work is typically to reactivate prior knowledge and continue practice of reading and writing skills. In some cases, summer work is utilized as a pre-assessment tool. AP and other advanced courses may require summer work to help cover materials due to the AP testing in April/May, prior to the end of the school year. Work assigned over the summer is considered required work. Due dates are determined by the teacher and communication between the student and the teacher is highly encouraged. Summer assignments will be graded as part of the first quarter work, equal to no more than 15% of the first quarter grade.

Department of English Summer Reading Assignments:

Bishop Fenwick High School students are required to read during the summer months in order to remain immersed in reading and writing outside of the school year, to engage with books that embrace the meaning and beauty of life even in difficult circumstances, and to promote a sense of community in their grade levels.

Each student is responsible for procuring a copy of the appropriate work(s). The student will be held responsible for their reading in the form of a written essay, project, discussion, and/or test during the first two weeks of school.

AP US History
Greetings! I am looking forward to our APUSH class together next year. To get a jump on our journey from 1491-2001, there will be a summer assignment. Here is your checklist before you leave for the summer:

Pick up a copy of the AMSCO book from room 402
Pick up the guided readings for Period 1 and Period 2
Over the summer, complete the work in the packet
1. Complete ALL notes and analysis boxes
2. Complete ALL multiple-choice practice questions
3. Complete HALF of the short answer practices (Period 1 = 2, Period 2=3)
Have completed packets ready to turn in at your first Monday/Tuesday class day (not the first day, not the second day, but the third day of class).
I have attached all documents in case they become lost.

Department of Science Summer Assignments:

AP Biology
Welcome to AP Biology! This is a comprehensive course covering about two semesters of college biology that STEM majors take. Summer work allows us a head start into the material so that we may finish in time to review for the AP test. I will email you the material (reading) and questions by June 3 or you can pick it up at Fenwick as a hard copy if you have not already during May. Your assignment is as follows:

Read the PDF of the first half of chapter 2 on basic chemistry before the start of classes.
Homework - Answer the questions sent with the PDF of the reading.

Complete the worksheet review of the material – due the first day of classes.
We will have a quiz on the material on the second class period after the start of school.

Your study of these topics this summer will enable us to get a strong start in our AP Biology course. I look forward to working with all of you this coming Fall semester! Look for an email with the materials for this assignment before June 3.

CCP Chemistry I
Welcome to CCP Chemistry I. This course counts towards your junior level chemistry credit at Fenwick and also as a 5-credit, one semester chemistry lecture and laboratory course through Sinclair College. The course covers the first ten chapters from our textbook. For a strong start, we must master basic memorization and skills by the time you start the semester. I will also provide you with a copy of the first two chapters of the textbook to read and study, as well as other material by email by June 3. (You may have already picked up a hard copy of that information before you left for summer.) There will be a test at the end of the second week of school on these topics. This test will serve as your first test grade of the quarter at Fenwick. Know the following information for the first test of the semester:

Know the names and symbols for elements from atomic number 1 through 54 (Hydrogen to Xenon).
From chapter 2 of your reading along with the accompanying sheets, know how to name binary ionic compounds, molecular compounds, acids, and simple organic compounds. You will be receiving an email from Dr. Kirchner by June 3 with all of the documents including text, assignment itself with links to videos and other things.
From chapter 1 of your reading, know how to measure using significant figures, compute with them, and use them correctly. I will also be sending you an assignment to help you practice by the same email I will send by June 3.

CCP Chemistry II
Welcome to CCP Chemistry II. This full-year Fenwick course will cover the second semester of the Sinclaire College two semester introductory chemistry course. We will study 10 of the last 15 chapters in your textbook. For a strong start to the semester, we will review the skills you mastered in CCP 1 which are needed for a good foundation in CCP 2. You will receive by email all of the assignments, handouts, and links to videos by June 3. (You may have also picked up a hard copy of that material before you left for summer.) There will be a test at the end of the second week of school on these topics. This test will serve as your first test grade of the quarter at Fenwick.

Be able to do Lewis Dot structures of any molecule or polyatomic ion and be able to analyze that structure for hybridization type, geometry, bond angles, whether it is a dipole or not, and finally number of sigma and pi bonds.
Be able to assign oxidation numbers to any atom in any compound. This will be useful in studying electrochemistry this year.
Relearn your naming of elements atomic numbers 1 through 54 along with names of simple molecular compounds, ionic compounds, and acids.
